Maybe I am missing something…

So I was at the gas pump yesterday and paid over $3.10/gallon to fill up the car, in Williamsburg. I know, I choose an SUV, so I am not complaining about the total cost to fill the car, we are lucky enough to be able to afford fluctuations like this.

But late yesterday I also saw an Reuters report that Chevron profit jumps 49% to $4,000,000,000. This on the heals of the big retirement packages for oil company execs….would 300 million have really been a hardship for him as opposed to the 400+ million he received? I am all for a capitalist society, but at the same time, we need a social responsibility. Oil companies are claiming poverty when it comes to bearing their own tax burden, but the evidence appears to contradict those statments of poverty.

There are people in this country that can not afford this type of change in pricing a change that can’t really be justified in my opinion. Why are oil prices rising? We have the most control in the Middle East then we have had in years and are able to control our oil interests, yet crude prices continue to rise. That brings another question, just because crude prices rise today, why do gas prices rise tomorrow…the process from crude to gas is not an overnight process. The reason prices are rising is simply because “they can.” Shame on the officials who we elected (and even the ones that didn’t actually win, but hold office *cough* Bush *cough*) to protect our interests for not doing so. I would love to see GW breakout his own credit card (okay so maybe it would be daddy’s card) and fill up Army 1 at the Exxon on 21st and M in the district.

Right on!!! Shame to all those who profit on the misfortunes of the ‘little’ guys- and there is plenty of shame to go around. I couldn’t believe the oil companies have ‘balls’ enough to announce the profits they did when there are folks who cannot afford enough gas to get to work! I don’t know why I should be surprised when you have to factor in the ‘war’ and who is profiting from same. It sure as heck isn’t you or me!
