Techy things…

Couple of big things going on in the tech world that I haven’t mentioned, I must be slipping in my old age.

  • Apple’s Boot Camp - In a bold, but predicted move, Apple Computer released an application that will allow you to run a licensed copy of Windows XP on your Intel Mac. This is an interesting move and we shall see how well it turns out in the long run. I did however benefit by the $10 stock price boost over last week. I promptly sold as I felt the inflated price would not sustain itself…about the only thing I have done right in my investment account lately.
  • Parrallels Workstation Beta - An even more interesting concept. It has been around for years with VMware in the Windows/Linux world and even VirtualPC tried to emulate the concept, but failed miserably. What this does is allows you to run Windows, Linux, Solaris, really whatever you want in a window on your Mac. This means, no rebooting into another operating system, just click and go…better yet, you can have multiple virtual machines running at the same time. So you could run Linux and Windows and MacOS X at the same time.
  • Google Calendar - Today Google released a beta of its web calendar. Very nice if I do say so myself. It allows for integration into iCal, notification of events, a nice AJAXy kind of interface.
  • 1.2TB for Matinee - And finally, the thing I am most proud of is my new media center array. It includes a 4 bay firewire enclosure from the folks at FWDepot, 4 x 300gig Maxtor drives, purchased at Staples and a little time from me. I have created a giant media store that allows us to watch DVDs from anywhere in the house with a TV or computer. No more running downstairs, sorting through DVDs, running back upstairs and putting it in the DVD player. Thanks to the MacMini (located at each TV in the house), we are a couple of clicks away from any movie own.

Hi,

I would love to get a contact email for your site, as I have some questions as well as content to offer.

Thank you,

Andre

[...] About three weeks ago our 1.2TB disk array went to the big disk array place in the sky. The drives themselves were fine (thank god), but the enclosure that made it all run wasn’t working properly. I have been going back on forth on what to replace it with and finally came up with the Infrant ReadyNAS NV which I purchased from Newegg. It came in yesterday while I was traveling down from DC. A couple of minutes of setup and I was up and running. While the web interface is a little klunky the unit itself is VERY fast. And I have finally run across a very usefull Dashboard widget, the Infrant Widget [...]
